Mitä oppilaat pitävät varhaisesta A1-kielen opetuksesta ja millainen käsitys heillä on omasta osaamisestaan?

2022

Vuoden 2020 alusta kieltenopiskelu on aloitettu Suomessa vuosiluokalla 1. He kokivat osaavansa tervehtimiseen, numeroihin ja väreihin liittyviä ilmaisuja…

Multilayered perspectives on language policy in higher education : Finland, Estonia, and Latvia in comparison

2016

This article analyses language policies in higher education (HE) in Finland, Estonia, and Latvia, as well as the European Union (EU). We take a multilayered approach to language policies in order to illuminate the intertwined nature of local, national, and international language policies in HE. We are particularly interested in the construction of national language(s) and the language(s) of internationalisation in our case countries. Finland, Estonia, and Latvia share common features as relatively small non-Anglophone countries in the Baltic region, while simultaneously having somewhat differing political and cultural histories. The results of our discursive analysis indicate that while the…

The Early Bird gets the Word

2019

Success in an increasingly globalized world sets requirements for versatile communication skills and understanding about other cultures. One of the keys to success is versatile language skills, on which the European Commission spoke out as early as in 1995, recommending that every European citizen should learn two foreign languages in addition to their mother tongue. Now, more than twenty years later, the launch of early A1 language teaching that is to begin in the first grade in Finland, in January 2020, is a significant step towards this goal. Studies show that early foreign language learning needs to be carefully carried out in order to achieve positive effects and the effects that have …

Teaching the pronunciation of English as an international language : suggestions for constructing a syllabus for Finnish learners

2012

Turkmenistan: Language Situation

2006

Turkmenistan, located in the Transcaspian region, has more than 4.8 million inhabitants, of which 85% are Turkmen, 5% Uzbeks, and 4% Russians. Its official national language is Turkmen, spoken by about 72%. Russian is spoken by 12%. In the post-Soviet period, the functions of Turkmen have been broadened and consolidated. Though the language policy aims at limiting the influence of Russian, this language has maintained much of its importance in public communication.

O rozwoju polskich dialektów

2014

The article deals with a phenomenon of the evolution of dialects. With respect to traditional dialects, the new post-dialectal formations are characterized not so much by the systemic changes but rather by the functional and pragmatic ones; thus, in their defining, those phenomena should be considered. The first change that had occurred in the original phase of the creation of the Polish ethnical language, under the influence of the dominating variation (i.e., culturally supreme), was the change of the hierarchies of inflexion in the diasystem of the national language, from a horizontal organization (equivalent dialects) into hierarchical one (dominating literary language and functionally l…

The Short and Intense Post-Nationalist Period in Finnish Higher Education

2020

This chapter presents the transition from a nationalist to post-nationalist period since the 1980s as the increasing systematic mobility and European cooperation as well as the fall of the Soviet Union turned Finnish higher education towards Western cooperation. The new internationalization strategies first aimed at founding mobility programmes for higher education and then particularly English medium study programmes. Post-national nation state emerges in the analysis mainly as an actor on the global economy. The discourses of competition and success in the global markets are interwoven with discourses of protection of the nation state. The use of English as an ostensibly self-evident and …

2021

This paper analyzes the expressivity of popular language from the novels ”Iancu Jianu, Head of Administration” and ”Iancu Jianu, Captain of the Hajduks” by N.D. Popescu. The popular language is a language specific aspect, a language version and a main component of the oral version of the national language. In literary works, the popular language has a stylistic purpose. The aesthetic value of the text is the result of the process by which the expressiveness of the writer`s language is converted into an individual literary rule. The stylistic processes and brands encountered in popular language are national specific and they reflect the history, the way of thinking and the feelings of Romani…
